Writing college application essays is the culmination of a senior’s transition to college.
Writing college essays is like a rite of passage for many seniors and begins during the summer after junior year. When writing their college essays, students are faced with identifying and articulating their beliefs, dreams, and goals. Self-awareness is important and increases along with their confidence during the writing process. Writing college essays is different from maintaining grades, sitting for SAT/ACT exams, and visiting potential colleges. Many students are challenged to reflect and take stock of their lives and goals within a limited the number of words in the essays. Unsure of what to say, wanting to impress their prospective schools, and fearful of rejection, students can be faced with writer’s block and freeze up.
Seniors may be faced with writing 10 or more essays depending on college choice.

As an academic coach, writing tutor, and counselor, I specialize in helping teens find their inner voice, overcome writing blocks and procrastination, and build their confidence as writers. I facilitate students writing college essays that get them into the school they want by using a method that begins the creative process and helps them to take inventory of their experiences, skills, and dreams. Additionally, I help students learn to prioritize and manage tasks during the college application process so their applications are completed and filed on time.
Writing essays for college applications or for high school is a process. It is either something that comes naturally, like with math, and it is a skill that must be learned. Many students learn the mechanics of writing but then struggle with what to write about. Others may have the inspiration but struggle with getting it onto paper and the execution of the writing style.
